Using the check list the designer arrives at multiple ideas to resolve the problems listed. This is a very important stage which starts with conceiving ideas, grouping them into clusters, arriving at multiple concepts and finally zeroing in on one all encompassing concept.

According to our Checklist, we have found out some concepts and designs which are as follows:

1. Cost Effective, good quality, strong and supportive:

a) Use of plastics.

b) Use of Stainless steel.

c) Use of Wood.

d) Use of Brass.

e) Use of ropes.

2. Non-Slip material:

a) Products may be through textured aluminum or rubber.

3. Portable and ligthweight:

a) Use of aluminium.

b) Use of Stainless steel.

c) Use of Fibreglass or Polypropylene/Moulded Plastic.

Based on the checklist and our previous research, we have three ideas to work on:

i) Grab bars

ii) Mats

iii) Bathing chairs

Thus, based on the scores we can say that grab bars will be the most convenient product for us.

Now, for grab bars to be portable we have to make it detachable which will be lightweight and easy to install.

Design 1: A semi-portable grab bar with the movable handle

Pros:

  1. Strong and reliable.

Cons:

  1. Installation needed.

  2. Cannot be shifted once the hooks are attached to the wall.

  3. Need to carry the handle every time one moves inside the bathroom.

Design 2: A fully portable design with two suction cups to attach to the wall

Types of suction cups: Threaded and lever suction cup

Lever suction cups are mostly used for heavy loads because of their less moving parts. Thus, we will be using them.

The arc rod design is considered for comfortable grip and aesthetics compared to the rectangular shape.

Final Design:

Pros:

  1. Easy to install.

  2. Portable.

  3. Cost-effective.

  4. Light weight.

Cons:

  1. Suction cups are not that much reliable for porous surfaces.

  2. Will get loosen over time, thus need for refitting.

  3. Needs some force to press it into the wall.

We have embedded a visual indicator (LED lights) to know if the grab bar is installed successfully. For better grip, we will use rubber grip in the holding position of the handle.

The diameter of the grab bar should allow the user’s hand to encircle and be in complete contact with the rail when gripping. Recommended circumference is 30-50 mm, however, it’s important to consider individual user. It can withstand upto 100 kg.The colour should be chosen so that there is adequate visual contrast between the grab bar and background wall finish.

Thus, based on the scores we can say that fully portable grab bars will be the most convenient product for us.
